Monash Health Emergency Medicine Training
Monash Health offers a wide range of training and education opportunities in emergency medicine within a supportive and collaborative environment. As part of the largest emergency training network in Victoria, Monash Health operates five emergency departments that provide high-volume, high-acuity clinical experience across both adult and paediatric care.
Our training network includes:
  • Monash Medical Centre (Clayton) – ACEM-accredited Tier 1 site for adult emergency medicine training
  • Dandenong and Casey Hospitals – ACEM-accredited Tier 2 sites offering comprehensive mixed emergency training (adult and paediatric)
  • Monash Children’s Hospital (Clayton) – Accredited for Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) and paediatric-focused training
  • Monash Heart – Accredited for Emergency Medicine Special Skills training
We support a range of career pathways, including early-career doctors seeking broad clinical exposure, ACEM Diploma candidates, and clinicians enrolled in our dedicated Career Medical Officer (CMO) program. Whether you're beginning your journey in emergency medicine or advancing toward fellowship, Monash Health provides the structure, variety, and mentorship to help you succeed.

Monash Health is a leading provider of emergency healthcare services in Victoria, with some of the busiest and most diverse emergency departments (EDs) in the state. As a trainee in Emergency Medicine, you will gain exposure to a broad range of acute presentations including resuscitation, toxicology, paediatric and O & G emergencies. With access to both metropolitan and regional EDs, you’ll develop the skills necessary to thrive in any emergency setting.

Research Opportunities
Emergency Medicine at Monash Health is deeply integrated with active clinical research. You’ll have opportunities to engage in projects focusing on areas such as trauma, sepsis, toxicology, and emergency systems design. Collaborations with Monash University—one of Australia’s top research institutions—enable you to pursue academic emergency medicine, population health, or education research that can shape future practice.

Professional Development
We are committed to supporting your growth as an Emergency Medicine clinician. Professional development opportunities include:
  • Structured education program  includes protected weekly teaching including a 24 month program covering the ACEM syllabus, simulation, and ACEM exam-specific teaching for primary and fellowship exams
  • ​Dedicated paediatric and toxicology teaching sessions
  • A structured emergency ultrasound accreditation program
  • Procedural skills sessions
  • Access to the Monash adult and paediatric Simulation based training 
You will be mentored by experienced ACEM examiners and FACEMs who are dedicated to supporting your progression through primary and fellowship examinations.

Mentorship Program
We offer a dedicated Emergency Medicine mentorship program designed to provide guidance, encouragement, and career development support throughout your training journey.
  • Peer Mentoring: Junior trainees are matched with more senior registrars or recently fellowed FACEMs, offering near-peer guidance on exams, rotations, and work-life balance.
  • Career Mentorship: Monash Health has a strong faculty of FACEMs with expertise in areas like trauma, toxicology, simulation, education, and research—giving you the opportunity to align with mentors in your specific areas of interest.
  • ACEM Support: Guidance is provided to help you meet your ACEM training milestones, navigate the College portal, and prepare for interviews and exams.

​Wellbeing Program
Your health and wellbeing are vital to your success as a clinician. Monash Health offers a comprehensive wellbeing framework that includes:​
  • Wellbeing workshops and resilience training integrated into the education calendar—covering topics like stress management, dealing with adverse outcomes, and mindfulness.
  • Protected teaching time and structured rosters that prioritise fatigue management and recovery.
  • Debriefing opportunities after critical incidents or challenging shifts, facilitated by trained staff or peer support
  • Confidential counselling services through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), with psychologists and mental health professionals accessible at no cost.

  • Regular social events, trainee dinners, and wellness days promote camaraderie and balance.
  • Trainee feedback forums and regular meetings with three trainee reps allow you to have a voice in shaping your training environment.

Rotations in Emergency Medicine
Monash Health offers a broad range of emergency-based rotations to satisfy ACEM training requirements:
  • Adult Emergency Medicine (quaternary, metropolitan and outer suburban sites)
  • Paediatric Emergency Medicine
  • Intensive Care
  • Anaesthetics
  • Short Stay Unit and Hospital in the Home
  • Internal rotations available to Mental health, Toxicology/Addiction medicine, Sim fellow, Gen Med, HITH, O & G 
  • External rotations facilitated to RMH (trauma), Eye and Ear, Women's Hospital,
  • Retrieval Medicine (with Adult Retrieval Victoria partnerships)
These rotations are designed to give you the breadth and depth of experience required to become a confident, capable FACEM.

Pathway to Fellowship and Beyond
