PAEDIATRIC EMERGENCY
Welcome to the Paediatric Emergency Education page.
Typically, you are with us for 13 weeks; some of you we get to keep for longer! It’s a cosy (aka nosey!) department and we love getting to know you and want to make your time with us fun and worth your while.
Here are some pointers you may want to consider:
1. Weekly teaching occurs every Wednesday from 10am-2pm, either on Microsoft Teams (link in your calendar), face-to-face sessions (MCH simulation space, Level 5) or online in collaboration with the other PEM sites around Victoria. All links and details can be found under the Paediatric 2024 tab HERE.
2. Choose Wisely. Monash ED offers multiple teaching streams for the different ACEM exams. Typically, Fellowship exam candidates join the Fellowship stream, but you need to apply for these. Chat with your DEMT (Celia or Stella) and let us know. Paediatric trainees will have different needs around your exams - come and chat so we can free you up to join OSCE training.
If there are specific sessions/ courses you want to attend, please let us know. Attendance and participation in teaching count towards your mark for this term.
3. Identify specific goals for the term. Humans love achieving and success is infectious. Identify what you want to get out of this term e.g. septic work up, fracture manipulation, procedural sedation etc. Also, identifying these early makes it possible to meet your training requirements early in the term (DOPS, WBAs). We want you to get something out of every shift; prioritize your learning at least once every shift!
4. Participate in adhoc training opportunities on the floor. Most of the senior clinicians (nurses and doctors) have expertise in a particular specialist area e.g. simulation, research, college examiners (ACEM + RACP), education, or some surprising clinical side hustles! Other formats of learning include insitu- simulation, airway huddles, skills days etc. Jump in and take advantage!
5. Mentoring. A lot of you already have mentors though your involvement in your training but we offer to connect you to a senior clinician in our department. These are separate to your assessors and offer a perspective that comes from their journey and career in paediatric ED. Sometimes it helps to have a chat and explore the case in more detail. You will get your allocation in the first week, it is entirely voluntary to make use of this opportunity.
